“Faith Lessons from Dirt”
Why is that that one hundred people gather on Sunday morning in church, hear the same sermon, sit in the same pew, and some take something away from it while others don’t? It is strange how people respond differently to God’s Word. Some are offended, some are critical; others receive it, learn from it, while others might reject it all together.
To help us understand his teachings, Jesus used parables to get people to think and understand what he was saying. In these parables, Jesus used everyday occupations, events, and people to teach spiritual truths about the Kingdom of God. Jesus used “earthly stories with a heavenly meaning.” The illustrations were simple and clear, and were quite obvious in their meaning. Jesus did this because too many people would hear him teach and yet would miss the spiritual point and truth.
In Sunday’s Bible text from Matthew 13:1-9, Jesus makes it clear that we all respond differently to God’s Word because of the “soil” or condition of our hearts. In the lesson for Sunday, Jesus reminds us that the heart needs to be nurtured and fertile so that the seed of God’s Word might take root and produce fruit for the Kingdom.
